To buy a Spotify gift card with bitcoin, you pay a third-party gift card store that accepts bitcoin (ideally over Lightning), receive a digital Spotify code by email or on the checkout page, and redeem that code on Spotify's redeem page. Spotify itself does not take bitcoin, so the store in the middle is what turns your sats into a code. With Lightning the whole thing usually takes a few minutes: pick the card, scan the invoice with your wallet, copy the code, redeem.
We run Lightning Faucet, where players earn and win sats every day and then withdraw them over Lightning. Turning those sats into something everyday, like a month of music, is one of the most common reasons people withdraw. So this guide follows the full path we watch players take, from a sat balance on our site to an active Spotify Premium account, including the specific snags that show up in our support inbox. If you already hold bitcoin in a Lightning wallet, skip to Step 2.
What "buying a Spotify gift card with bitcoin" actually means
The head term, defined
A Spotify gift card bought with bitcoin is a normal Spotify gift code, the same one sold in shops, that you paid for in BTC instead of cash or a bank card. The code carries a fixed value in a local currency (for example a set amount of dollars, euros or pounds) and is tied to the country it was issued for. Once redeemed, that value is added to your Spotify account and covers Premium months until it runs out.
Nothing about the code knows it was paid for with bitcoin. The bitcoin part happens entirely at the gift card store's checkout. That matters because it means the redeem step is identical to any other gift card, and all the decisions that can go wrong happen before you pay.
The five steps at a glance
- Get sats into a Lightning wallet you control.
- Choose a gift card store that sells Spotify codes for your country and accepts Lightning.
- Start checkout and pay the Lightning invoice from your wallet.
- Copy the Spotify code from the confirmation page or email.
- Redeem the code while signed in to your Spotify account.
The rest of this article walks through each step with the details that decide whether it takes three minutes or three days.
Step 1: Get sats into a Lightning wallet you control
Why the sats have to land in your own wallet first
Gift card stores that accept Lightning show you an invoice at checkout, a QR code that says "pay exactly this many sats within this time window." To pay it you need a Lightning wallet with a spendable balance: Wallet of Satoshi, Phoenix, Blink, Zeus, Coinos or any similar wallet works.
If your sats are sitting in a balance on a site like ours, move them to that wallet before you start shopping. Lightning Faucet does not pay merchant invoices on your behalf. Your withdrawal goes to your wallet, and your wallet pays the store. Keeping those as two separate steps also protects you from the most common failure we see, covered in Step 3.
How a Lightning Faucet withdrawal works
Withdrawals on Lightning Faucet use LNURL-withdraw. You do not create an invoice and paste it anywhere. The flow is:
- Open the withdraw page on your account.
- Enter the amount you want to withdraw and continue.
- The site then shows an LNURL-withdraw QR code for that amount (and a tap-to-open link on mobile).
- Scan the QR with your Lightning wallet, or tap the link to open it in the wallet, and confirm.
- The wallet fetches its own invoice from our server and the sats arrive, usually within seconds.
Everything is sat-denominated from end to end, so there is no conversion step between your balance and your wallet. A few operator details worth knowing before you withdraw for a purchase:
- A single payment can be up to 100,000 sats, and daily payout caps apply. If you hit a cap, the remaining balance can be withdrawn later.
- If a payment does not complete on the Lightning network, the debited amount is refunded to your balance automatically, normally within a minute or two. A balance that looks unchanged right after a failed attempt is that refund landing.
- Many rapid attempts in a short window trigger an automatic security hold on withdrawals. Make one attempt, and if it fails, wait for the refund before trying again.
- Bonus sats from promos carry a playthrough requirement. Only your withdrawable balance can go to your wallet, so check that figure, not the headline balance, when planning a purchase.
Our step-by-step Lightning withdrawal guide covers wallet choice and troubleshooting in more depth.
Where the sats can come from
If you are starting from zero, the earn hub lists every way to collect sats on Lightning Faucet. Task earnings from microjobs, Boltwork (a paying open beta where you complete short judgment tasks for sats) and offers can be withdrawn without depositing (offer earnings unlock at 10,000 sats of lifetime offer earnings, or once your account has completed a withdrawal). Faucet, scratchcard and free spin rewards are bonus sats, and withdrawing bonus sats or game winnings needs a first deposit of 100 sats or more. Players who already hold sats can also play games, join Lightning poker with real players, or take a position on a prediction market. One piece of advice from watching a lot of balances: once you have enough withdrawable sats for the card you want, withdraw them first. Do not wager the sats you have earmarked for a purchase.
Step 2: Choose a gift card store that takes Lightning
What to check before you pick a store
Several online stores sell digital gift cards for bitcoin. We are not recommending a specific one here, but every good choice passes the same checks:
- Region match. Spotify codes are issued per country and generally only redeem on an account registered in that country. Choose the card for the country your Spotify account is set to, not the country you happen to be in.
- Lightning at checkout. Some stores accept only on-chain bitcoin, which is slower and can cost more in network fees than a small gift card is worth. Look for a Lightning option on the payment page.
- Denominations. Spotify cards come in fixed values. Pick the one that covers the number of Premium months you want at your local price.
- Delivery method. Most stores show the code on screen after payment and also email it. Use an email address you can open right away.
- Refund policy for unpaid or expired orders. A clear policy tells you what happens if your payment arrives late.
Red flags
Walk away from a store that asks you to send bitcoin to an address in a chat message, offers a card well below its face value, asks for your Spotify password, or cannot tell you which country a code is valid in. A legitimate store generates the invoice inside its own checkout page and never needs access to your Spotify account.
Step 3: Pay the Lightning invoice
Fund first, then start checkout
A Lightning invoice has an expiry, and the store locks the bitcoin price of the card for a limited window when it creates the invoice. This is where the most avoidable failure happens: a player starts checkout, sees the invoice, then goes to withdraw sats from their balance to cover it. By the time the sats reach the wallet, the invoice has expired and the order is void.
The fix is the order of operations. Withdraw to your wallet in Step 1, confirm the sats are showing as spendable, and only then add the card to your cart.
Scanning and confirming
At checkout, choose the Lightning payment option. The store shows a QR code. In your wallet, tap send or scan, point the camera at the QR, and check two things on the confirmation screen before you approve: the amount in sats matches what the store shows, and the invoice has not expired. Approve, and the payment usually settles in a second or two. The store's page should update to show the order as paid and reveal your code.
Sizing the payment
The store converts the card's face value into sats at the moment it creates the invoice. The rough math is:
sats needed = card price in your currency ÷ BTC price in that currency × 100,000,000
Keep a small cushion above that figure in your wallet. Some stores add a service fee on top of face value, and Lightning routing fees, while usually tiny, are paid by the sender. A wallet that is short by even a handful of sats will refuse the payment, and if you then top up, the invoice may expire while you wait.
If the payment fails
If your wallet reports a failed payment, the sats did not leave, so there is nothing to recover. Check the invoice timer. If it is still valid, try again once. If it has expired, go back to the cart and generate a fresh invoice, which will be priced at the current rate. If your wallet shows the payment as sent but the store still shows "unpaid," do not pay a second invoice. Keep the payment details your wallet shows and contact the store's support with the order number.
Step 4: Redeem the code on Spotify
The redeem flow
Sign in to Spotify in a web browser and go to Spotify's redeem page (spotify.com/redeem). Enter the code exactly as delivered, confirm, and the value is applied to your account. Redeem in a browser rather than inside the mobile app, because the app does not always offer a code entry screen.
Check which plans the code covers
In many countries a gift card pays for Premium Individual, while plans such as Family or Duo may not accept gift card balance. Spotify's rules differ by country, so read the plan terms shown on the redeem page before you buy a large card if you are on a shared plan.
What happens when the balance runs out
A redeemed card pays for Premium month by month until the value is used up. After that, the account returns to the free tier unless you add another card or a payment method. Many players just repeat the process each time: withdraw, buy, redeem. With Lightning the repeat is quick enough that it stops feeling like a workaround.
Mistakes we see players make
Withdrawing a balance that is still bonus-locked
A player sees a healthy balance, plans a card around it, and then finds only part of it is withdrawable because some came from a bonus with playthrough still outstanding. Check your withdrawable amount before choosing a card denomination.
Retrying a withdrawal over and over
When a withdrawal fails because a wallet was offline or a route could not be found, the sats come back to your balance on their own within a minute or two. Hammering the withdraw button in the meantime is what triggers a security hold, and a hold needs our support team to review and clear it. One attempt, wait, then retry.
Paying on-chain for a small card
On-chain bitcoin works at many stores, but it needs confirmations before the code is released, and the network fee can be a noticeable slice of a small card. For anything sized like a streaming subscription, Lightning is the better rail.
Buying the wrong region
This is the one mistake that cannot be fixed with a retry. A code for a different country generally will not redeem on your account, and gift card stores rarely refund a delivered code. Confirm your Spotify account's country first.
Starting checkout before the wallet is funded
Covered above, and worth repeating because it is so common. Fund the wallet, then shop.
Why Lightning is the right rail for this
Small, instant, sat-denominated payments
A Spotify card is a small purchase, and that is exactly the size Lightning was built for. Payments settle in seconds, fees are typically a fraction of a sat to a few sats, and both sides of the journey, our withdrawal and the store's invoice, speak the same unit. That is also why we built Lightning Faucet on Lightning rather than on-chain: small, frequent payouts only make sense when moving them is nearly free.
Earned sats you can verify
If some of the sats you are spending came from games on our site, you can check that every result behind them was fair. Each dice roll, spin or hand in our games is provably fair: before you play, we commit to a hashed server seed, you supply or accept a client seed, and each bet uses a nonce that counts up. After the server seed is revealed, you can recompute any result yourself and confirm it matches what you were shown. The dice game is the simplest place to try the verification end to end.
Start with the sats
Your next step
If you already have sats in a Lightning wallet, pick a store that sells Spotify codes for your country and follow Steps 2 to 4. If you do not, the fastest no-deposit start is task earnings on the earn hub: complete microjobs or Boltwork tasks, watch your withdrawable balance, withdraw with one LNURL scan when it covers the card, and turn it into music. You can also try the weekly free Bitcoin spin (5 to 100 sats, spin weekly) for extra sats along the way.
