Bitcoin freedom

What Bitcoin freedom means in practice: withdraw by QR scan, sign in with your wallet, earn sats with no deposit, and verify every result yourself.

Bitcoin freedom is not a slogan you sign up for. It is a short list of things you can actually do with your money: receive it without asking anyone, move it out whenever you decide, prove who you are without handing over an email address, and check the result of anything you pay for instead of trusting it. If a service lets you do all four, you have real Bitcoin freedom while you use it. If it quietly takes one away, you have less than the marketing says.

We run Lightning Faucet, a Bitcoin and Lightning faucet with games, earn surfaces, multiplayer poker, and prediction markets. Every day we watch players sign in with a wallet scan, pull sats out through a QR code, and verify game results against seeds we published before they played. So this guide is not a philosophy lesson. It is a practical test of what Bitcoin freedom means on a real sat-denominated service, including the places where any hosted service (ours included) limits it, and the exact steps to keep as much of it as possible. If you want to follow along, open the earn page in another tab.

What Bitcoin freedom means in practice

A working definition

Bitcoin freedom is the ability to hold, receive, send, and verify value without needing permission from a gatekeeper at each step. The important word is "each". Plenty of services let you buy bitcoin, and then hold it in an account you can only drain on their schedule, through their forms, after their review. That is a bank account with a different ticker.

For a player on a Lightning service, Bitcoin freedom breaks down into four abilities you can test in a few minutes:

  1. Exit. Can you move your sats to a wallet you control, quickly, without a support ticket?
  2. Identity. Can you use the service without tying it to an email inbox, a phone number, or a password that can be reset by someone else?
  3. Granularity. Can you move tiny amounts, a handful of sats, without a fee eating them?
  4. Verification. Can you check, with math, that what you were told happened actually happened?

Why Lightning is where these become real

On the Bitcoin base layer, the first and third abilities are expensive. An on-chain payment of a few hundred sats can cost more in fees than it is worth, and confirmation takes minutes. Lightning changes the economics. Payments settle in seconds, amounts are denominated in sats, and moving a small balance out costs next to nothing. That is why a faucet can exist at all: without Lightning, paying a player for a scratchcard or a microjob would cost more than the reward. Every Bitcoin freedom test below assumes Lightning, because that is the layer where you can exercise it at the size real players actually move.

Freedom to exit: withdraw on your terms

The test

The single most important question about any service holding your sats is how fast you can get them out. A balance you cannot withdraw is a number on a screen. Ask: is there a withdraw button, does it work without a human approving it, and where do the sats land?

How exit works on Lightning Faucet

We use LNURL-withdraw. On the withdraw page we show a QR code (or a tappable link if you are on your phone). You scan it with your Lightning wallet, choose the amount, and confirm. Your wallet fetches the invoice from us automatically and pulls the sats. You never paste an invoice, never type a node address, and never wait for someone to press "approve". Any wallet that supports LNURL-withdraw works, including Wallet of Satoshi, Phoenix, Blink, Zeus, and Coinos.

Two operator details worth knowing:

  • Failed payments refund themselves. Lightning routing occasionally fails, usually because the receiving wallet is offline or a route lacks liquidity. When that happens, the sats we debited are returned to your Lightning Faucet balance automatically within a minute or two. If your balance looks unchanged after a failed attempt, that is the refund working. Wait for it before trying again.
  • Rapid retries trip a safety hold. If an account fires off a burst of withdrawal attempts in a short window, we pause withdrawals on it so a human can take a look. It protects players whose accounts have been compromised, and it does not clear on its own; support reviews it and lifts it for accounts in good standing. The practical rule: one attempt, let any refund settle, then try again.

The honest part: custodial balances are not freedom

Here is something a generic Bitcoin freedom article will not tell you, and we are the operator saying it. While your sats sit in your Lightning Faucet balance, they are custodial. We hold them. That is how every hosted game, faucet, and exchange works, because the service has to be able to credit wins and debit wagers instantly. It is convenient, and it is not self-custody.

Bitcoin freedom on a hosted service therefore comes down to how easily you can turn a custodial balance back into a self-custodied one. Our answer is a QR scan, but there are still per-payment and per-day limits on withdrawals, because a service that pays out instantly needs a ceiling to protect everyone's balance from an attacker draining an account. If a large withdrawal hits a limit, the rest is available the next day. Treat your balance as a staging area, not a savings account.

What to do

  • Pick a Lightning wallet before you need one, so exit is never a research project.
  • Withdraw winnings and earnings regularly instead of letting a large balance build up.
  • If you want full self-custody, use a wallet where you hold the keys (Phoenix and Zeus are common choices) as the destination.

Freedom of identity: sign in without an inbox

The test

Who can lock you out of your account? If the answer is "whoever controls my email" or "the site's password reset form", your access depends on a third party. That is a real limit on Bitcoin freedom even if the sats themselves are fine.

LNURL-auth: your wallet is your login

Lightning Faucet supports signing in with a Lightning wallet through LNURL-auth. You open the login page, scan the QR code, approve the login in your wallet, and the browser signs you in a second or two later. Your first scan creates an account; every later scan with the same wallet signs you back into it. There is no email, no password, and no confirmation link.

What happens underneath is the useful part. The QR contains a one-time challenge. Your wallet signs it with a key it derives specifically for our domain, and sends us the signature plus the public half of that key. We verify the signature and sign you in. We store your public key and nothing else about the login. There is no password database to leak, nothing to phish out of you on a fake login form, and nothing anyone can reset on your behalf.

Because the key is derived per domain, the identity we see is different from the one any other site sees, even from the same wallet. Two services cannot match up their user lists and discover the same person uses both. Your login also reveals nothing about your wallet balance or payment history.

The trade-off to keep in mind

The key lives in your wallet, not in you. If you install a different wallet app and scan, you get a different key and therefore a brand new, empty account. The most common "my balance is gone" message we receive about wallet login is exactly this: the original account is intact, and the player scanned with a different app. Back up your wallet, and keep using the same one to sign in. Email accounts can still use a recovery code to restore access on a new browser, but wallet login removes that whole category of friction.

Freedom to earn and spend in small amounts

The test

Can you receive a few sats from anyone, anywhere, without opening a bank account, proving residency, or meeting a minimum that excludes you? Sending and receiving tiny amounts is where traditional payment rails fail hardest, and where Bitcoin freedom is most tangible for people who have never had access to them.

Where the sats come from on Lightning Faucet

You can start with zero deposit. New accounts get a signup gift, and there are recurring ways to earn on the earn page: free spins, a daily streak, scratchcards, microjobs, an offerwall, and Boltwork, a paying open beta where you earn sats for human-judgment data tasks. Amounts are small and vary by surface, and we do not dress them up as an income. What they are is a way to hold your first real sats, withdraw them to your own wallet, and see the whole loop work end to end without spending anything.

That loop is the point. The first time a few earned sats land in a wallet you control, through a QR scan, from a service on the other side of the world, the idea of Bitcoin freedom stops being abstract.

Deposits work the same way in reverse

If you want to play with your own sats, deposits are a Lightning invoice generated on the site that you pay from any Lightning wallet. They credit automatically once paid. No card, no bank transfer, no chargeback window, and no waiting for a payment processor to decide whether it likes the transaction.

Bonus sats come with strings, and you should know which

Bonus sats, from free spins or deposit promotions, carry a playthrough requirement before winnings funded by them can be withdrawn, and wagers are capped while a bonus is active. This matters for freedom: a bonus balance is not the same as a withdrawable balance. Running a bonus balance down to zero does not complete the requirement either. If unrestricted exit matters most to you, play with earned or deposited sats and skip promotional bonuses. Always check which of your balances is withdrawable before you plan around it.

Freedom to verify: don't trust, check

The test

"Don't trust, verify" is the oldest Bitcoin principle, and it applies to more than the blockchain. When a service tells you that you won or lost, can you check the result yourself, or do you have to take its word for it?

How provably fair verification works on our games

Every game result on Lightning Faucet is derived from three inputs: a server seed we commit to before you play (we show you its hash in advance), a client seed you can set yourself, and a nonce that counts up with each bet. The result is computed from a hash of those inputs. Because we published the hash of the server seed before your bet, we cannot change it afterwards without the hash no longer matching. Because you control the client seed, we cannot pick a server seed that targets your bets.

When you rotate your seed pair, we reveal the old server seed. You can hash it yourself, confirm it matches the commitment you saw earlier, then recompute any past result from the three inputs. The dice game is the simplest place to try this, because each roll maps to a single number you can check by hand.

Verifying outcomes beyond games

The same instinct applies to prediction markets. Markets resolve on public, checkable facts: a final score, a weather reading, a block difficulty adjustment, a mempool fee level. You do not need to trust our call; you can look up the same source we resolve against. A market whose outcome you cannot independently check is one you should be wary of anywhere.

A five-minute Bitcoin freedom check you can run on any service

The checklist

Before you put sats into any Bitcoin or Lightning service, ours or anyone else's, run through these questions:

  1. Can I withdraw without a human approving it? Look for LNURL-withdraw or a Lightning address payout, not a "request withdrawal" form.
  2. Do failed withdrawals refund automatically? Ask support or read the help pages. Silent losses on routing failures are a red flag.
  3. What are the limits, and are they stated? Every instant-payout service has them. A service that will not tell you its limits is worse than one with low limits.
  4. Can I sign in with my wallet? LNURL-auth removes the email and password attack surface entirely.
  5. Can I verify results? Look for published seed hashes, client seed control, and a verification page you can use without logging in to a support chat.
  6. Is the balance withdrawable or bonus? Know the difference before you rely on a number.

Running it on Lightning Faucet

You can test every item above here in a few minutes. Sign in with your wallet on the login page. Collect your signup gift and anything available on the earn page. Play a few rolls of dice and look at the seed panel. Then withdraw to your own wallet with a scan. If any step does not match what we have described, tell us, because that would be a bug.

Where to go from here

Pick the part of Bitcoin freedom you want to exercise first

  • Want sats without spending any? Start on the earn page and withdraw your first earnings to a wallet you control.
  • Want to test verification? Play a few rounds of dice, rotate your seed, and recompute a result.
  • Want to put sats on an outcome you can check yourself? Browse the open prediction markets.
  • Want to play against real players for sats? Sit down at a Lightning poker table, where buy-ins and cashouts are sat-denominated and move through the same Lightning balance.

The habit that matters most

Whatever you do on any hosted service, end the session the same way: move what you want to keep into a wallet you control. That one habit turns a custodial convenience into real Bitcoin freedom, and it takes a single QR scan.

Frequently asked questions

What does Bitcoin freedom mean for an everyday user?

In practice it means you can receive sats without permission, move them to a wallet you control whenever you choose, sign in without an email or password, and verify results yourself instead of trusting the service. On Lightning these abilities work at small amounts and settle in seconds.

Is my Lightning Faucet balance self-custodied?

No. Like every hosted game or faucet, your on-site balance is custodial so wins and wagers can be credited instantly. You get self-custody by withdrawing to a wallet where you hold the keys, which on Lightning Faucet takes a single LNURL-withdraw QR scan.

How do I withdraw from Lightning Faucet to my own wallet?

Open the withdraw page, scan the LNURL-withdraw QR with your Lightning wallet (or tap the link on mobile), choose the amount, and confirm. Your wallet fetches the invoice automatically, so you never create or paste one. If a payment fails to route, the sats return to your balance within a minute or two.

Can I use Lightning Faucet without an email address?

Yes. Sign in with LNURL-auth by scanning the login QR with a Lightning wallet and approving it. The first scan creates your account and later scans sign you back in. Keep using the same wallet app, because a different wallet produces a different key and a new account.

How can I verify a game result is fair?

Each result comes from a server seed whose hash we show before you play, a client seed you control, and a nonce. When you rotate seeds we reveal the old server seed, so you can confirm it matches the published hash and recompute any past result yourself.

Why are there withdrawal limits if Bitcoin is about freedom?

Instant automated payouts need a ceiling so an attacker who takes over an account cannot drain it in one go. Per-payment and per-day limits protect player balances, and anything above a daily limit can be withdrawn the next day. Withdrawing regularly keeps you well clear of them.
